New Zealand (along with communities worldwide) is at a pivotal time, as ICT and digital literacy are increasingly seen as one of the front-line tools in tackling many of the economic and social problems effecting our country.

ICT has the potential, but can we deliver as a sector?

Join Kevin Ackhurst, Country Manager of Microsoft New Zealand, as he outlines his views on what the ICT sector can do, both individually and collectively through bodies such as the NZCS, to tackle both the issue of digital literacy and capability throughout the public at large, business community, and our profession, and more importantly, why this is so absolutely necessary.

Kevin will also discuss his views on the need for greater diversity in our profession (specifically addressing gender and race imbalance in ICT professionals), and the ICT industry's need to embrace a corporate social responsibility role by using ICT to build the capability of New Zealand communities.

He will also outline what this will mean for the development of our sector and the accelerated economic development of New Zealand.

NZCS Canterbury: Panel on ICT Skills Needs and the Role of Tertiary Sector in ICT Education

21 October 2008: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Room L233, CPIT City Campus - Madras Street

How to get there - Enter through the main entrance at the Madras Street Car Park, when inside take he stairs (opposite the library) to level 1, and then turn left and continue straight to find L233

NZCS Canterbury Branch presents:

Panel on ICT Skills Needs and the Role of Tertiary Sector in ICT Education

Today, access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) plays an essential role in both economic and social development. An ongoing stream of ICT solutions and e-technologies is contributing towards a significant transformation of corporate business processes worldwide.

However, economic growth and success through the use of ICTs both depend on availability of highly skilled workforce. A workforce that is trained to be capable of responding to the ever-increasing change in skill and knowledge needs of both existing and new jobs within the ICT sector. What's more, emerging complex systems of work, innovative management systems and new ways in which product and services are being delivered require ICT workers to posses a broader range and/or greater depth of skills.

Recently, there has been much discussion over the shortage of adequately skilled ICT workforce. Effective matching of skills and capabilities with the needs of the ICT job market has become crucial. There is a need for communication and partnership amongst key players within the sector so as to make informed decisions about developments within the tertiary and ICT training institutions - so as to address ICT sector's skill requirements in an effective manner.

The next NZCS Canterbury Branch evening event is held at CPIT on 21 October 2008. A panel representing various sectors will discuss some of the key issues as it concerns ICT sector's skill needs and some of the relevant issues of interest. Following the panel, you will have the opportunity to comment and express your views over drinks. You will also get the opportunity to view posters that highlight some CPIT students' projects - examples of tertiary sector's partnership with ICT industry in order to develop work-ready ICT graduates.

Do not miss the opportunity to be part of an exciting NZCS evening.

NZCS Auckland TPN: Justine Sanderson - What the eye can't see

NZCS Auckland TPN: Justine Sanderson - What the eye can't see

15 October 2008: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Presidents Room
The Auckland Club
34 Shortland Street, Auckland

NZCS Test Professionals Network (Auckland) presents:

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Justine Sanderson - What the eye can't see

What the eye can't see... or what cognitive psychology can teach us about usability.

Ever stared at a computer screen and not seen what you were looking for? Ever had an error message come up, and not noticed it?

A couple of psychological phenomena may explain these and other curious happenings we notice in usability evaluations: people often don't see what's right in front of them!!

With a couple of video demonstrations, we'll explore these 'blind spots' and others aspects of visual perception and look at how they may relate to web design and usability.

Trust us: it will be an eye-opening experience ;-)

Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

About the Speaker

Justine Sanderson runs her own user experience consultancy - Userfaction - and wears many hats.

Part usability consultant, part information architect and part interaction designer, she's helped a range of clients organise their information and develop more user-friendly websites and applications. She's fascinated by how people interact with technology, and is always on the lookout for quirky ways to demonstrate the value of usability.

Kevin will also discuss his views on the need for greater diversity in our profession (specifically addressing gender and race imbalance in ICT professionals), and the ICT industry's need to embrace a corporate social responsibility role by using ICT to build the capability of New Zealand communities.

NZCS TPN: Sarah Rees - the Art of Test Team Management and Motivation

NZCS TPN: Sarah Rees - the Art of Test Team Management and Motivation

16 September 2008: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Westpac,
Level 1, Optimation House
1 Grey Street, Wellington

NZCS Wellington Test Professionals Network presents:

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Sarah Rees - The Art of Test Team Management and Motivation

There is information aplenty on how to manage the test process itself, but the less predictable area of managing the team is often neglected.

The saying "Management is management is management" is true; good management skills go a long way, but managing and motivating a test team does present some rather particular problems.

When it comes to a test team, a real understanding of the personalities of testers and the challenges of working in testing will go a lot further than relying on a standard management approach.

Come along to hear Sarah Rees present her thoughts and join in the discussion on this important and relevant topic.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

Test Professionals wish to thank Westpac for providing the venue

About the Speaker

Sarah has 17 years extensive experience in software testing in England and New Zealand, gained through working for a number of government departments, IT service providers, Telecommunications and private industry. She has specialised in the area of User/Business Acceptance.

During her career, she has defined and implemented test strategies for a range of software development projects, managed pre-production testing, and is an experienced test team manager.

Registration Details:

Everybody welcome. There is no charge to register, please pay $5.00 at the door. Numbers will be limited to 60 people and the doors will close by 5:15pm.

TPN is a non-profit organisation set up to support all Wellington testing. Confirming attendance at this event is a commitment to attend. Please do not book in if you will not be attending.

Price:

"The Innovators of ICT" Series (September: Don Christie)

The Innovators of ICT is a new monthly series of events from August to December 2008 in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Hamilton, bringing some of the true innovators in the field of ICT to a city near you.

Free for NZCS members and inexpensive for non-members (see below).

Those presenting in this series have proven that real success is possible from New Zealand when we "think outside the square", and now they're challenging you to do the same. As well as outlining some of the secrets of "success through innovation", the Innovators will talk about some of the war stories from the diverse paths they've travelled and outline why New Zealand could be the international home of innovative ICT if only we, as a country, started to get serious about where we want to go and what we need to do to get there.

Some of the Innovators presenting created export markets, some redefined (or are redefining) how business or community functions in New Zealand, and, in fact, around the world. Some are leaders of Open Source and some are the country's greatest ICT corporate identities. One thing they all have in common, however, is a raw passion for both Innovation and ICT, and this is a series you really don't want to miss.

NOTE: The next Innovators event is in the week beginning 8th September - Apologies for the late notice!

Don Christie: Using Open Source to Build Innovative Solutions

Don Christie has an extremely interesting story of innovative success relevant to those in both the commercial and open source software spaces.

As a founder of what is now New Zealand's largest open source solutions provider, Don is one of the first people to build a truly viable and successful commercial model in New Zealand around open source software and has managed to build his company to almost 100 employees.

Don's company Catalyst IT, which was voted in NBR Magazine earlier this year as the most exciting company in New Zealand, provides significant solutions to companies such as Telecom, Fairfax, the TAB, plus a host of Government agencies. Catalyst also architected, designed and developed, host and maintain NZ Registry Service's core system, the Shared Registry System (SRS) which maintains the .nz domain space (ie handles all .nz internet addresses).

In this intriguing presentation, come and hear what inspired Don to take his passion for Open Source to the mainstream and the hurdles he has had to overcome along the way. Don will also discuss his keys to success in turning concepts into reality, an integral step on the path of innovation. The insight presented by Don will be of huge interest to others aspiring to be the best in their field through hard work and true innovation.

Don is also the organiser of the NZ Open Source Awards and president of the NZ Open Source Society.

Registration Details:

NZCS Innovators Series: Don Christie (Auckland)

8 September 2008: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Xero
Level 1, 20 Beaumont Street
Auckland CBD
(Assemble from 5pm, presentation starts at 5:30pm)

Finger food provided

NZCS in association with MED is proud to present:

"The Innovators of ICT" Series (September: Don Christie)

The Innovators of ICT is a new monthly series of events from August to December 2008 in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Hamilton, bringing some of the true innovators in the ICT sector to a city near you.
